Day One.
Very early morning Monday 28th August saw my wife, daughter, two dogs and myself board Bumble and head South West to North Devon. The plan was to beat all the other Bank Holiday traffic. This we certainly did as apart from a handful of cars and the usual HGV traffic, not another soul was on the roads. I promised to have them in Devon for breakfast and I kept to my word.
This
would be our first family holiday in quite a time so we were all looking
forward to it. We had managed to book a static caravan with a private garden on
a farm. My wife and I had gone to Devon
earlier this year to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary. We got married at
the Lee Bay Hotel in, not surprisingly, Lee Bay, Devon. It was a lovely hotel
that to us seemed to have gone through the seventies and thought, "Hang a
minute. I quite like the seventies. I think I'll stop here for a bit" and
the hotel and staff never moved on. It was that anniversary trip that we went
to see Bumble on the way down and bought her on the way back! A week later and
Bumble was on our driveway. But I digress.

| Combe Martin Bay. |
Our first port of call was Combe Martin for breakfast. We had to wait for the cafe to open. It was dog friendly as most cafes in Devon are. Doggies bring in the dollars! The dogs even had a little bit of sausage brought out to them. They knew how to be won over! The cafe was especially nice due to the interior decor of VW camper vans. That and the fact that the owners son had just toured Europe in a T4. It had then been unfortunately put out to pasture when it gave up the ghost once back in Blighty. He has since bought a T5.

Devon had started to wake up, so after breakfast we pushed
further onwards around the coast and came across a vantage point overlooking Watermouth. Some brave people were trying rock diving. A little cool for me but looked fun nevertheless.

Round wards Bumble took us into Ilfracombe where she started to make new friends.
Ilfracombe is a beautiful seaside town with a harbour. Well worth a visit or a longer stay. The beach by the harbour gets full quite quickly so grab a space as soon as you can. The Britannia Hotel on the quayside does a nice pint and not a bad sandwich either. By now it was close to check in time so we said good bye for now to Ilfracombe and said hello to our new digs.

Our accommodation for the week was a two bedroom static caravan at Shaftsboro Farm just outside of Lee. It was big enough for all of us to be comfortable without being on top of each other. The best thing was that it had an enclosed garden so Crowley and Poppy could run free and annoy the neighbours with their barking.
